There are various species of scorpions in Australia, however they are not as prevalent or abundant as they are in some other regions of the world. More than 100 scorpion species live in Australia, their size, colouring, and behaviour of these species varies.
Scorpion (Cercophonius squama) commonly known as the Forest Scorpion or Wood Scorpion is the only scorpion found in Tasmania.
They have been shown to be nocturnal, mildly protective, and sedentary, which makes it extremely improbable that they will move in the face of drastic environmental changes. These scorpions, which are adapted to a wetter climate, may construct shorter or deeper tunnels depending on the circumstances in order to spend several months away from harsh climatic conditions.
Scorpions in Tasmania do sting, and the result isn’t pleasant but it’s not fatal. Scorpions are arachnids, close relatives of Ticks, Mites, and Spiders. Scorpions are often thought of as desert animals, but in fact, they inhabit many other habitats as well. If you see them in or around your home or business, they are seeking a source of food and shelter.
Female & Male 25-40mm in length and their colour consists of different shades of brown. Females give birth to 20-30 live offspring over several hours and carry the infants on her back for 10-20 days until their exoskeleton stiffens and hardens. The young are whitish and soft-bodied when they are born.
Methods of treatment may include:
Our licenced scorpion technicians will check the premises for potential scorpion harbourage places. The inspection will also result in a discussion about preventative measures that may be done in the future.
Scorpion technicians will then treat the inside, outside, roof cavity, sheds, garages, and sub-floor area whilst specifically focusing on areas that may be prone to more activity. This treatment is extremely effective.
Prioritise prevention and, if required, engage with our pest management experts who are familiar with scorpions. Furthermore, use caution while touching things or reaching into locations where scorpions may be lurking.
All species of scorpion have a venomous sting, but only a relatively small proportion carry venom that is lethal or harmful to humans. If you are bitten by a Scorpion you may experience intense localised pain, similar to a wasp sting for on average of up to six hours.
Scorpions are nocturnal creatures, meaning they hunt at night and generally seek shelter throughout the day, this can make it difficult to spot a problem. Scorpions tend to be more active in the Summer months between October-March.
Scorpions are treated with a chemical spray, similar to the one used for spider treatments, except an additive is required because they are more difficult to kill.
Applications of chemicals can be used in a number of efficient ways to manage scorpions. In order to guarantee that a ratio is utilised that is safe for your pets and family, scorpion control pesticides should be formulated and sprayed by a professional pest control technician.
Scorpions, like most other species, are seeking shelter, moisture and a food source. Preventing Scorpion invasions can sometimes be impossible, but their are ways you can make it harder for them:
