At Scorpion Pest Management, we made the decision over two years ago to stop using Second-Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs) in our rodent control programs.
This wasn’t driven by regulation—it was a deliberate move towards safer, more sustainable pest control that protects wildlife, pets, and the environment without compromising results.
What Are SGARs in Rodent Control?
SGARs (Second-Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides) are commonly used poisons designed to control rats and mice by preventing blood clotting.
While effective, these rodenticides are known for:
• Persisting in animal tissue
• Remaining active long after consumption
• Increasing the risk of secondary poisoning
Because of this, SGARs have become a growing concern in modern pest management practices.
Why We No Longer Use SGAR Rodenticides
Protecting Wildlife and the Environment
One of the biggest risks associated with SGARs is secondary poisoning.
When rodents consume SGAR bait and are then eaten by:
• Birds of prey
• Native wildlife
• Domestic pets
…the toxin can transfer through the food chain.
By eliminating SGARs, we significantly reduce risks to non-target species and ecosystems, particularly in sensitive environments like Tasmania.
Reducing Environmental Impact
SGARs are not easily broken down in the environment. Their long-term persistence can contribute to:
• Bioaccumulation in wildlife
• Ongoing environmental contamination
• Increased ecological risk
Our approach focuses on low-toxicity, environmentally responsible pest control solutions that align with sustainable practices.
A Smarter Approach to Rodent Management
Modern pest control is no longer about heavy chemical use—it’s about targeted, strategic solutions.
We use:
• Non-anticoagulant rodenticides (lower secondary poisoning risk)
• Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies
• Rodent monitoring systems
• Trapping and exclusion methods
This ensures effective rodent control while minimising unnecessary chemical exposure.
Effective Rodent Control Without SGARs
A common question we hear is: “Does it still work?”
The answer is yes.
Our SGAR-free approach delivers:
• Proven effectiveness
• Faster, targeted outcomes
• Reduced risk to people, pets, and wildlife
In many cases, it actually improves long-term control by addressing the source of the problem—not just the symptoms.
